A family business is a life work

You know how to build a family business. But turning it into a lasting legacy that you can pass on to the next generation with peace of mind is something quite different. Nobody has taught you how to do that. Without an understanding of what is really holding you back, the handover will drag on, relationships will suffer and the business will stagnate.

With my support, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of what you’ve built and how you want to leave it behind in the long term. I’ll help you understand what steps are needed to prepare your family business for a potential handover and when it’s time to let go. Your personal journey is just as important as finding the right successor, and you need to start it as early as possible.

I support leaders of family businesses through bespoke advisory programmes and individual coaching.

my philosophy

Best to plan your succession well in advance

“‘We’re doing well, aren’t we?’ is what most entrepreneurs think. But often the reality is that they have to work incredibly hard just to keep up. As a result, family businesses rarely reach their full potential, either because the next generation isn’t ready to take over, or because the current leaders can’t let go as they don’t know what to do once they’ve stepped down.

Entrepreneurs are often unaware that they are building a life’s work and that it is at least as important to hand this over properly and at the right time. The psychological knots in which family and business are entangled must be untangled. This will give you, as a leader, insight into what you are building and when you can hand it over.

Awareness

Awareness creates space

Valuing your life’s work is no easy task. A family business is a precious asset, and succession within a family business does not happen automatically. Not for you, and not for your successor. It requires you to shed light on the (often unconscious) resistance and to address it head-on. This frees you up to take new steps.

That process doesn’t come naturally to anyone. Is the next generation ready to take over? Do they understand what is expected of them? And are you ready to truly let go? Awareness sheds light on what is going on subconsciously within you all.

Your task

Letting go of your legacy

Your business is a living system in its own right, with a purpose. You have put a great deal of energy into it, and your work often reflects a hidden sense of loyalty to your family. To ensure that energy is not wasted, it is important that you give some thought, in good time, to what you want to leave behind and how. Even if you’re not yet thinking about handing over the reins, one day you’ll have to let go of your business. This requires enormous courage and is one of the most important things you’ll ever do.

I’ll guide you in untangling the knot between you as an individual and your role as a leader. You’ll gain greater clarity about the unconscious barriers to succession and find the space to take the next step.

about Tim

I know both sides of succession

My name is Tim and I am the founder of True Calling. I once took over the family business from my father. Things went well at first, but as time went on, we started to have quite a few conflicts. It turned out my father was very apprehensive about the ‘black hole’ and couldn’t let go of the business. In the end, he did step down. With the benefit of hindsight, I would have had different conversations with him about the succession.

After 15 years as CEO, during which I had further expanded the business, I handed it over to an external CEO and a new owner. What I hadn’t expected was that it would take me years to find my bearings in life again. I hadn’t realised just how closely my identity had become intertwined with my role in the company. It turned out that what my father had feared was a reflection of what I had gone through. We had the same problem, he and I.

During my time as CEO, I learnt a great deal about myself as a result of the pressure, responsibility and expectations that come with running a family business. This led me to explore psychology, mindfulness and breathing techniques. I now apply this knowledge to support my clients. These days, I provide guidance on succession planning in family businesses to ensure that outgoing leaders, successors and the business itself thrive.

My approach is down-to-earth, empathetic and practical, focused on understanding patterns, managing change and reconnecting with what really matters.

I’ll walk alongside you whether you’re handing over your business or are the successor. I’ll help you find your footing, so that you can then find the courage to take the step that lies ahead.

I live in Belgium with my family. This is the work that calls to me.
